When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs based in current science, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

The AFSP Indiana Chapter trained 5,445 Hoosiers in 2018 to recognize at-risk individuals in mental health distress, learn the language to help these individuals appropriately and how to access community resources to keep these individuals safe from suicide in the interim of getting them to needed help. These trainings were possible because of the generous donations to Indiana Out of the Darkness Walks in 2017.

Why We Walk:
Every year suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, and yet suicide prevention doesn't get the attention and funding given to other leading causes of death. It's up to Walkers like us to make Mental Health a priority in Indiana.

In 2016 (current available stats) 44,965 people died by suicide in the US, 1034 were Hoosiers. Nationally, someone dies by suicide every 11.7 minutes. A suicide attempt is estimated to occur every 28 seconds in the US. Together we can change the culture of mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life.

#AFSPIndiana has been working year round to change the way our communities, schools, churches, professionals, family and friends talk and think about mental illness and suicide.
